The most common reason bedsheets come untucked or bunch up into an uncomfortable knot in the middle of the night is inadequate tuck-in allowance.

In India, mattresses have evolved dramatically over the last decade. While older coir and cotton gaddas were 4 to 6 inches thick, modern memory foam and pocket spring mattresses (such as Sleepwell, Kurlon, Wakefit, and Emma) are 8, 10, or even 12 inches high. Standard cheap sheets simply do not have enough fabric to wrap beneath the mattress.

The Golden Formula for Tuck-In Allowance

Before ordering any flat sheet online, do this quick 10-second calculation:

The Bedsheet Width Formula

Required Width = Mattress Width + (2 × Mattress Height) + 8 inches (Tuck-in)

Example: For a 72" wide King Bed with an 8" thick mattress:
Width = 72 + (2 × 8) + 8 = 96 inches minimum.
A 90" × 100" Queen sheet will leave your sides completely exposed. You need a 100" × 108" King sheet.

Flat Sheets vs Fitted Sheets in India

Should you buy traditional flat sheets or elasticated fitted sheets?

  • Flat Sheets: Versatile and easier to iron and fold. However, if your mattress is on a boxed wooden storage cot (very common in Indian apartments), tucking fabric into tight wooden frames every morning can hurt your fingers.
  • Fitted Sheets: Feature an elastic band sewn into the perimeter seam. Once slipped over the four mattress corners, they stay wrinkle-free and taut for days without daily re-tucking.
